For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
As we enter the second week of Advent, we focus on the Peace that the birth of Christ brings into our lives. This passage from Isaiah is the same passage we read as we lit the second Advent Candle on Sunday, but it’s too important to leave out of our devotional lives this week.
Maybe part of what it means for us to prepare our hearts for Christmas is to remember that Christ- and the peace Christ offers us- has the capacity to transform every aspect of our life. Particularly as we dive deeper into the Advent Conspiracy, it is more important than ever to allow our lives to be invaded not by the chaos of our cultural Christmas celebrations, but by the pervasive and consuming peace that comes with a biblical celebrations of Christ’s birth. Rather than running from place to place look for the right gift or the best, new decoration, how different would our Christmas celebration look if we slowed down to enjoy our families. Replace Christmas chaos with the Prince of Peace this year, and enjoy a more meaningful Christmas season!
